At the end of the season, Manchester United are set to lose two key players in the form of Casemiro and Harry Maguire.
The pair of veterans are now in the final eight months of their contracts, with the club holding the option to extend their agreements by a further 12 months on their current terms, keeping them both at Old Trafford until summer 2027.
Despite their age, the pair have truly come into their own under Ruben Amorim, with both routinely popping up with goals at vital times to help towards the club’s success.
However, Laurie Whitwell has now revealed on the Talk of the Devil podcast that United have not begun any discussions about renewed contracts with either player.
The Red Devils are understood to be looking at how the season goes before they begin any discussions.
Both stars are understood to be enjoying playing for United and have no intention of leaving if Ruben Amorim still want them in his squad, so there doesn’t appear to be much risk of losing either man to a pre-contract agreement in January.
However, the main issue lies with their wages, with Casemiro’s £280,000 per week making him one of the highest earners at the club.
Given the side’s financial struggles, United have been looking to cut their wage bill, offloading their top earner, and signing new stars on much lower wages, such as Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford’s salaries of over £300,000 per week, then signing Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha on £200,000 per week.
So, if Casemiro and Harry Maguire were to agree reduced wages to stay at Old Trafford, there could be scope for them to remain at Amorim’s disposal.
