Cameron Carter-Vickers aka Celtic’s Big Strong Man was pictured training with the first team in Portugal as the players were put through their paces with the season opener just three weeks away…
The USA international is the glue who holds the Celtic defence together, he’s clearly our main man at the back, and our defence doesn’t exactly fill you with any great confidence when he’s unavailable through injury.
Carter-Vickers unusually looked out of sorts at times last season, but to be fair he was carrying a knock which limited his playing time towards the end of the campaign, which in turn led to an end of season operation to hopefully rectify his problem once and for all.
Even when not at his best, the former Spurs man is still head and shoulders above the rest of our central defence, and that makes it all the more pleasing he’s back in first team training.
He’s not only the best central defender at the club, he’s the best in the country and to have him in contention for the season opener as well as next month’s all important Champions League play-off round qualifier is a massive boost for everyone connected to Celtic.
Celtic’s transfer business is far from finished and in terms of the back four there remains a clear need for a second left-back signing of the summer, a player who can share the load with returning Celtic hero Kieran Tierney who cannot be allowed to play over 50 games a season back at the club he loves.
And there’s also a strong desire to bring in another central defender with both Gustaf Lagerbielke and Maik Nawrocki both heading out the door over the past few weeks, the former on a permanent move to Portuguese side Braga and the latter to German tier two side Hannover 96. Justin de Haas appears to be the strongest link so far.
