Liverpool have begun preliminary discussions regarding a move for former Celtic right-back Jeremie Frimpong which will provide Celtic with a tidy windfall should the transfer be completed…

It is reported that Anfield officials are keen on bringing the former Celtic full-back, now at Bayer Leverkusen, to Liverpool in the summer.

According to sources speaking to the PA news agency, discussions are still in the early phases. Frimpong could potentially join Liverpool as a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has been strongly linked to be a target for Real Madrid.

Frimpong will have many suitors this summer

It has been suggested that English Premier League sides Manchester City, Manchester United, and Chelsea are also pursuing Frimpong, who has a reported release clause of £34m.

A potential transfer for the Dutchman would have a major effect on Celtic, as the club retained a sell-on clause when Frimpong was sold to the Bundesliga side in 2021.

Celtic would receive would receive around £6.7m

If Frimpong is sold for £34m, the German club’s total profit would be approximately £22.2m, meaning Celtic would receive around £6.7m from the deal. Leverkusen’s CEO, Fernando Carro, previously acknowledged that the club is likely to part ways with one of its key players in the summer.

Carro said: “Every year we need to sell one big player to find budget for new signings. So, probably we will sell one player. We’re planning to sign two or three players with that amount of money.”

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has previously suggested that Frimpong could make a move this summer.

Romano outlined: “Jeremie Frimpong remains one to watch in the summer. Dutch right-back could leave Leverkusen in the summer with many clubs interested. The clause in his contract is worth a fee of around €40m.”
