Charlotte FC acquired veteran midfielder Eryk Williamson from the Portland Timbers on Wednesday.

The Timbers receive up to $350,000 in general allocation money in exchange and will retain a sell-on percentage if Williamson is transferred outside of MLS.

Williamson, 27, recorded six goals and 20 assists in 98 MLS matches (60 starts) with the Timbers from 2019-24.

"He competed and broke through here as a young player, overcame difficult moments and returned from challenging injuries, all to continue finding a way to make an impact on the field," Timbers general manager Ned Grabavoy said. "... The Portland Timbers wish Eryk all the best with the new opportunity and this next phase of his career."

Portland will receive $100,000 in 2025 GAM and an additional $250,000 if certain incentives are met.

"Eryk is a player who our front office and coaches know very well and brings proven MLS production to our midfield," Charlotte general manager Zoran Krneta said. "He is a versatile player who is creative and dynamic on the ball which combined with his knowledge of the league makes him an excellent fit for our team. He's won titles at both the club and national team level, and we're excited to welcome him to Charlotte."

Williamson helped the Timbers win the 2020 MLS is Back Tournament. He also helped the U.S. Men's National Team win 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup.

"As I prepare to say goodbye to this incredible city, I find myself reflecting on the past seven years with immense gratitude and pride," Williamson said. "From the very first moment I stepped onto the field at Providence Park, I felt the love and passion of this community, and I'll carry that with me for the rest of my career and beyond."

Arsenal U-turn: Arteta Opts to Retain Duo Previously Linked With Summer Exits

So far, Arsenal’s summer transfer window appears to be going according to plan. While Mikel Arteta has admitted that no window ever goes entirely to plan, this one may be as close as he has experienced. The Gunners have strengthened across the pitch: a top striker in Viktor Gyökeres, defensive cover in Cristhian Mosquera, midfield additions in Martin Zubimendi and Christian Nørgaard, a winger in Noni Madueke and Goalkeeper Kepa Arizzabalaga. It is the kind of ambitious summer that many Arsenal fans have long hoped for. Trossard and Zinchenko to stay The business is not finished, with Eberechi Eze expected to arrive next from Crystal Palace. But alongside arrivals, Arsenal are also expected to sell players to balance their summer spending. Interestingly, two names previously tipped for departure now appear set to stay. According to Football Transfers, Leandro Trossard and Oleksandr Zinchenko are no longer expected to leave the club, despite attracting interest from abroad. Trossard had reportedly drawn interest from both Fenerbahçe and Bayern Munich, while Zinchenko was being tracked by AC Milan and several Premier League sides. Though the pair could have generated respectable transfer fees, Arsenal now look set to keep them both. Transfer U-turns after key conversations It is understood that Zinchenko submitted a transfer request earlier in the window, prompting the club to begin looking at left-sided defensive options. However, following conversations with Arteta, the Ukrainian international has now recommitted to the project in north London. Trossard, meanwhile, is expected to sign a new deal. Contract talks had stalled in recent weeks, but discussions have since resumed and a compromise is now said to be close. With the Belgian and the Ukrainian set to stay, attention turns to who may still leave the club, with Thomas Partey, Kieran Tierney and Jorginho having already moved on this summer. Reiss Nelson has also been linked with an exit, though he recently impressed in a pre-season appearance. Could he be staying too? __________________________________________________________________________________________

Rangers Sign Former Stanley Cup Champion to Tryout Agreement

The New York Rangers are adding to their forward depth ahead of their upcoming training camp. The Rangers are entering a new chapter of their organization under new head coach Mike Sullivan. After missing the postseason last year, the organization is trying to rebound and respond accordingly in 2025 and 2026. Former Stanley Cup champion forward Conor Sheary is the latest player to join the new-look Rangers. The veteran forward agreed to a professional tryout agreement (PTO) with the club and will look to earn an NHL deal with his performance in training camp and the preseason. Sheary is a veteran of 593 NHL games. Originally an undrafted free agent, he signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins after completing his collegiate career. Following a year with the Penguins' AHL affiliate, he forced his way onto the NHL squad after posting 36 points in his first 30 games of the 2015-2016 season at the AHL level. His debut NHL season went better than ever expected, and he was a key part of the Penguins' lineup that won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017. Sheary's coach at the time, both at the AHL and NHL levels, was Mike Sullivan. Now, he'll get the chance to reunite with the coach under whom he won two championships. In addition to playing for the Penguins, Sheary has played for three other NHL franchises. The Pens dealt him to the Buffalo Sabres before the 2018-2019 campaign, but he would return to Pittsburgh the following season at the trade deadline. After his second stint with the Penguins, he joined the Washington Capitals. He played three seasons in Washington, D.C. before landing with the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he spent the past two years. Over his 593 career games, he's compiled 124 goals and 143 assists for 267 points. His best NHL season came during the 2016-2017 campaign, his second in the league. He scored 23 goals and added 30 assists for 53 points in 61 regular-season games.

Rece Davis Reveals Who He Thinks Will Win QB Battle At Notre Dame

Notre Dame’s quarterback battle is one of the more compelling storylines entering the 2025 college football season. With Steve Angeli transferring after spring practice, the competition is down to two names: Kenny Minchey and five-star freshman CJ Carr. ESPN’s Rece Davis believes Carr is the favorite to win the job, though he emphasized it’s just speculation based on public perception. “I think most believe it will be Carr, ultimately,” Davis said. “That’s not Pete Thamel news breaking it... I’m just saying the outside perception for those of us who watch think it will probably be Carr.” Carr, the son of former Michigan QB Jason Carr and grandson of ex-Wolverines coach Lloyd Carr, made headlines after a strong showing in the spring game. But ESPN insider Pete Thamel added some nuance to the situation, revealing that those inside the program have been impressed with Minchey throughout the offseason. “Everyone saw Carr crush the spring game, and I think that’s where sentiment and perception came from,” Thamel said. “But Minchey is an impressive guy, and he hits better with what Mike Denbrock has done.” Minchey, a redshirt freshman, brings more mobility to the table, something Denbrock has used to his advantage in past offenses with Jayden Daniels at LSU and Riley Leonard at Duke. Carr, meanwhile, is a polished passer who fits the mold of a traditional pro-style quarterback. Denbrock previously coached at Notre Dame twice (2002 to 2004 and 2010 to 2016). Notre Dame's new offensive coordinator may influence the final decision, but the schedule adds pressure. Freeman and the Fighting Irish open the season at Miami, in what could prove to be their toughest opponent during the regular season. Davis says nothing’s off the table: “I asked Marcus that. His response... was ‘I will do whatever it takes to help this team win football games.’” Whether that means a two-quarterback system or not, Notre Dame needs a clear leader at the helm if it wants to stay in the playoff hunt.

Bengals Training Camp Day 4 Recap: Shemar Stewart Enters the Fray and Joe Burrow Suffers Rare 0-Fer

CINCINNATI – The themes for Day 4 of Cincinnati Bengals training camp were short passes and the end of a long holdout. All eyes – and cameras – were on Shemar Stewart as the rookie first-round pick took part in his first practice as a professional following his decision to end his standoff with the front office and sign his contract Friday. Stewart worked with both the first- and second-team defenses and played some special teams before signing autographs for fans and answering questions from the media. In his first rep in 11-on-11, Stewart was with the second team and received a double-team block. He primarily lined up at right defensive end, but he did switch to the left side on some snaps closer to the goal line. Stewart admitted the heat got to him at first before he got used to it. Bengals head coach Zac Taylor estimated he gave Stewart about 10 reps. That number should climb Monday in his second practice, and the Bengals’ first in pads. Play of the Day It took until the fourth practice, but the defense finally recorded its first interception of camp Sunday. But it was basically a gimme. Backup quarterback Jake Browning ran a naked bootleg but couldn’t find anyone to throw to. He eventually signaled for tight end Tanner Hudson to break long and threw up a prayer. The only way Browning would have actually thrown the pass in a game is if it were fourth down, as Hudson was surrounded by Nate Brooks, Daijahn Anthony and Tycen Anderson. Brooks deflected the ball, and Anderson came down with it. Last year as a rookie, Anthony notched the team’s first interception of camp in the first practice to win a competition that was a little more than friendly. Anthony has been among the most vocal trash talkers through the first week of camp, and he was at it again yelling at the offense after the play. Then he trash talked his fellow DB after practice in the locker room, trying to take away his win for the first interception. “That doesn’t count because it was tipped,” Anthony said. Quote of the Day “I ain’t having that s—t. This is what I do. This is what I do! THIS IS WHAT I DO!!!” – Jordan Battle. On the final snap of the first red-zone drill, Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow tried to hit tight end Mike Gesicki on a fade in the end zone. But because Battle had such good coverage on Gesicki, Burrow had to put the ball way out in front, and it sailed out of bounds for an incompletion, triggering the Battle braggadocio. “I told him I’m going to talk every day,” Battle said. “But nah, that was a little out of character for me. Sometimes I get like that when I feel like I have something to prove, or I have a lot of energy that day or if I feel like the defense is having a good day.” Quote of the Day Runner-Up “Shut your mouth.” – Gesicki to Battle as he was crowing. 3 Up Shemar Stewart It’s all about the attendance, not the performance. Stewart getting his deal done and getting on the field for his first practice since the team drafted him is a significant step. Tycen Anderson With a spot on the 53 all but assured because of his play on special teams, Anderson is showing he can be counted on at safety should Geno Stone or Battle have to miss time. Oren Burks On the play after the defense recorded the first interception of camp, Burks forced a fumble when he punched the ball free from rookie running back Tajh Brooks. 3 Down Joe Burrow The Pro Bowl quarterback already has found his way onto this list twice in four practices. The red zone drill did not go well for Burrow and the offense as he failed to complete a pass on five attempts. He and Andrei Iosivas came close to hooking up for a touchdown, but the receiver went out of bounds before he caught the ball and didn’t get two feet in after the grab along the back line of the end zone. Lucas Patrick Taylor said the guard will miss a couple more days after injuring his right leg in Friday’s practice. Marco Wilson Taylor said the cornerback is week to week but didn’t disclose the reason. The missed time coupled with the impressive play of DJ Ivey could put Wilson’s spot on the 53-man roster in jeopardy. Attendance Patrick and Wilson were the only two players not embroiled in a contract standoff who didn’t practice. Cam Taylor-Britt did individual drills but didn’t take any snaps in 11s or 7s. "Some guys we'll just continue to monitor through the days,” Taylor said when asked about Taylor-Britt. “Some of them over the case of yesterday and this morning are sore, so you have to protect them. Cam is a guy we'll take day-to-day.” Taylor was getting stretched out after the first couple of periods in Friday’s practice.
