The transfer window in England has closed, but business continues to be done…

Chelsea have just announced that an important academy player has signed a new contract and will now go out on loan.

Kiano Dyer has signed a new deal until 2030, and has joined Eredivisie team Volendam on loan.

Chelsea surprise fans with news of new contract with youth talent

Dyer has been at Chelsea 2021, when he joined the Blues from West Brom at the conclusion of his Under-14s season.

He’s been a regular for the Development Squad for the last two years, and finally got his first team debut last December in the Conference League game away against Astana. What a time to be alive that was!

His last season in PL2 with the Dev Squad saw him rack up 32 appearances, scoring 3 goals along the way. The central midfielder has tons of talent and is highly regarded by the academy coaches – that’s why losing him on a free transfer this summer looked set to be such a blow.

Given there had been no news on that front, we were sure he would be leaving. However instead this announcement comes out of nowhere. What a nice surprise.

Dutch relegation battlers an interesting destination for Dyer

Volendam will be an interesting loan destination for the 18 year old. They’re freshly promoted to the Dutch top flight, so they could have a tricky season in store. But they should guaranteed Dyer lots of starts, and hopefully his development comes on quickly this season. He’s definitely got Premier League potential if he continues to improve – few players can be such a youth team regular for us at 16/17 and not eventually make the big time.

We’ll be keeping an eye on how Kiano gets on. He’ll play with former Blue Xavier Mbuyamba.
