Chelsea are interested in a player they sold just a year ago.
CaughtOffside are claiming that the Blues want to make a move for Diego Moreira, a former Benfica youth star they picked up on a free then sold to their sister club Strasbourg for a low fee.
The Belgium international has gone from strength to strength in Ligue 1, shining for Liam Rosenior’s team as they enter a second really impressive season in a row.
Switched from winger to left wing back, he’s turned into an absolute menace, and showed what he could do against PSG on Friday night in a thrilling 3-3 draw.
We’ve got to say, this sounds pretty unlikely for a number of reasons. Chelsea have Marc Cucurella at left back and signed Jorrel Hato just a couple of months ago as his backup.
But there’s one twist in the tale which might just make things likely. The report says that Chelsea have an option to buy Moreira back. They sold him for just £1.7m, and he’d now be worth maybe €20m, so assuming that buy-back clause is reasonable, there’s money to be made here.
But if Chelsea are being extra careful about not getting in trouble with FIFA and UEFA for any rule breaking or accountancy tricks using their sister club, they may want to steer clear of this sort of thing entirely. If Moreira keeps playing well, there could be some tricky decisions to make.
Moreira isn’t the only Strasbourg player we’re being linked with. Guela Doue is having a great season at right back, and today the Blues were linked with €30m interest in the Ivory Coast international.
Meanwhile, Reece James tried to defend the red card picked up by Malo Gusto against Nottingham Forest, but it’s pretty indefensible in the circumstances.
