Chelsea have held talks with representatives of Man United’s Alejandro Garnacho, eyeing a bold move for the young star.

Transfers between Manchester United and Chelsea are not new. Over the years, the two clubs have shared a number of important players. Cases such as Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic and more recently Mason Mount are clear examples of how the paths between Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge often cross.

This trend could continue this summer, as a young United player is on the London club’s radar. As Chelsea look to revamp their attacking options on the flanks, talks with certain representatives open the door to another significant transfer between two giants vying for the top of English football.

Alejandro Garnacho is the name that has reconnected the two clubs. The Argentine winger has been a consistent presence in the starting line-up this season, but his inconsistency has raised doubts in certain quarters at the club. Chelsea, with an urgent need to add dynamism on the flanks in the face of Jadon Sancho’s underperformance and the uncertain situation of Mykhailo Mudryk, have shown real interest, as per Journalist Nizaar Kinsella of BBC.

Contacts were already made in January, although no offer was formalised. Now, the manager of the Blues, Enzo Maresca, seems ready to insist. Although Garnacho has said he is happy in Manchester, his situation is not entirely certain. Chelsea could offer him a new stage, more prominence and a system that favours his style.

Moreover, for United, who have moulded him from their youth team, any income would be considered pure profit. That is tempting from a financial point of view. However, selling him to a direct competitor always carries risk. Garnacho is also followed by other European clubs, which could raise his value or push for a quick decision from Old Trafford.

“In the wide attacker position, Chelsea have spoken to representatives of Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho and Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens in January. Those moves could be linked to whether Jadon Sancho signs permanently or whether Mykhailo Mudryk can escape his provisional ban for allegedly failing a drugs test.”

Critically, Manchester United should think more than once before accepting an offer from Chelsea for Garnacho. Although the player has yet to explode on a consistent basis, his potential is undeniable. Loaning him out now could generate immediate returns, yes, but bolstering a direct rival with a talent who could shine for a decade does not seem like a smart move. Moreover, if the club is committed to a new cycle with young players under Ruben Amorim, losing one of the most promising players would be a contradiction in terms.

The most sensible thing would be to offer him continuity, accompany him with an environment that favours his growth and avoid decisions motivated solely by economic urgencies. Selling him to Chelsea could come back as a blow in the future, especially if Garnacho reaches the level many expect.

United need to build a project that combines development and results, and getting rid of a home-grown talent does not fit that logic. The priority must be to keep those who can make a difference, not give them away to the opposition for momentary gain.
