This weekend saw Chelsea suffer another defeat at the hands of Brighton as The Blues fell further behind in the race for Champions League football.
As such, the London-based side have now made the decision to sack manager Liam Rosenior with immediate effect.
Announcing the news on their club website, Chelsea confirmed: “Chelsea Football Club has today parted company with Head Coach Liam Rosenior.”
The statement continued: “On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, we would like to place on record our gratitude to Liam and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the Club.
“Liam has always conducted himself with the highest integrity and professionalism following his appointment midway through the season.”
Explaining their reason for Liam Rosenior leaving the club, Chelsea commented: “This has not been a decision the Club has taken lightly, however recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season. Everyone at Chelsea FC wishes Liam every success in the future.
“Calum McFarlane will take charge of the team as Interim Head Coach until the end of the season with support from existing Club backroom staff, as we strive to achieve European qualification and progress in the FA Cup.
“As the Club works to bring stability to the Head Coach position, we will undertake a process of self-reflection to make the right long-term appointment.”
The decision comes as Chelsea fall from sixth to seventh after the 3-0 loss to Brighton which was the latest in a string of losses to Newcastle United, Everton, Manchester City and Manchester United.
Now, Calum McFarlane will be tasked with ensuring the club beat Brighton, Brentford, Bournemouth and Everton who are all within three points of the Europa League qualifying sixth place spot.
While a top-five finish is still mathematically possible, with Manchester United and Aston Villa continuing to pull away in third and fourth place on 58 points, with Liverpool just behind on 55, a Champions League spot looks just out of reach.
