This is a Chelsea predicted lineup for their second Club World Cup group game. The two-time Champions League winners will take on Brazilian side Flamengo, who are managed by former Blue Filipe Luis. A member of that Champions League-winning squad Jorginho has also just made the move to the Serie A leaders.
Robert Sanchez started the tournament opener after ceding his place to Filip Jørgensen in the Conference League final. Marc Cucurella, Levi Colwill, Tosin Adarabioyo, and Reece James has emerged as the first-choice back line when everyone is healthy. Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, and Romeo Lavia have split the starts in the pivot.
Up front, there’s been a lack of realistic options which has seen Noni Madueke, Cole Palmer, and Pedro Neto start as the three attacking midfielders on most occasions. Nicolas Jackson remains the first-choice striker.
Enzo Maresca has continued to use his base 4-2-3-1 setup, which moulds like a chameleon when in possession to a different system. In the first half against LAFC the double-pivot stayed together as Marc Cucurella occupied space beside Cole Palmer in a 3-2-4-1 with James as an RCB. This shifted in the second half when Enzo came on as he crashed the box as an attacking midfielder from deep and Gusto was inverting beside Caicedo. The tweaks are usually nothing on paper but on the pitch they can make a world of difference.
The Blues had a very strong end to the season and kicked off their Club World Cup campaign with a 2-0 win. They’ve gotten positive results in nine out of their last 10 games. Defensively, things have improved a lot by learning how to keep clean sheets and grind out close 1-0 wins.
There are players who weren’t taken to the tournament who will not be available. Mykhailo Mudryk, who is suspended, Djordje Petrovic. Raheem Sterling, João Felix, Wesley Fofana, and Axel Disasi are just some of the names who are absent.
