This is a Chelsea predicted lineup for the final of the Club World Cup. The Blues face a monumental task as they go head-to-head with Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain, helmed by Luis Enrique. One minor blip aside, the Parisiens have looked nigh-on unstoppable even when Bayern Munich won the possession battle. How will Enzo Maresca set up in one of his first heavyweight contests at the helm?
Robert Sanchez has started all but one match in the competition in goal. Filip Jorgensen was his replacement. The back four has shifted due to availability but Marc Cucurella is essentially a lock at left-back. In the middle we’ve seen Levi Colwill, Benoit Badiashile, Tosin Adarabioyo, and Trevoh Chalobah with Reece James, Malo Gusto, and Josh Acheampong playing on the right.
In the defensive midfield spot, Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo was the preferred pivot. Suspension and injuries have moved Enzo Fernandez back there with Andrey Santos and James also starting as the deeper/ more defensive member of the pair.
Cole Palmer and Enzo have shared the central attacking midfield position with the Englishman pushed out wide in a few outings in this tournament. Christopher Nkunku and Pedro Neto have played on the wings in the later rounds of the CWC.
Up front, Nicolas Jackon started the competition as the striker before being rotated out for Liam Delap. A suspension allowed Delap to get a run of matches before his own suspension saw new signing Joao Pedro come in and score twice as the striker against Fluminense.
Enzo Maresca has set up in a fluid 4-2-3-1. In possession it shifts the player roles based on the opposition with the recent move being a 3-1-6 with a diamond midfield crowding the edge of the box and allowing players to crash the box to create chances. The main tweak is where the full-backs invert or in Cucurella’s case whether he moves inside or overlaps as the left winger inverts. It has been pretty successful in controlling matches and has proven defensively solid.
A loss to Flamengo had panic alarms ringing but since then the team have looked very controlled on both ends of the pitch. A 4-1 win over Benfica, 3-0 win over Tunis, and a 2-0 against Fluminense were very dominant, even the close tie against Palmeiras required Estevao magic to avoid an easy win. It’s proving difficult to score against Maresca’s side as nobody but Flamengo has managed to put more than one past Sanchez.
There are a few injury worries but nothing huge for the manager. Dario Essugo has a small issue and won’t be rushed back while Badiashile remains doubtful. Lavia missed the last two outings with injury and hasn’t been seen in training. Caicedo and James were doubtful but could be ready for the final.
