Tottenham are keen to compete on all fronts this season under Thomas Frank, and are ready to splash the cash in the upcoming transfer window. The Lilywhites, rather unexpectedly, spent £180m in the summer on new signings to bolster the depth and quality of the squad. And they are ready to follow the same trend once again after the Lewis family announced £100m cash injection into the North London club specifically set aside for player transfers and wages.
Currently sitting sixth in the Premier League, Spurs are just one point shy of the top four. Few anticipated that they would be challenging for a European spot in Frank’s debut season, yet the team has exceeded expectations. The onus now falls on the club’s hierarchy, particularly Fabio Paratici and Vinai Venkatesham, to back the Danish tactician in January and address the remaining weaknesses on the pitch.
Chief among those concerns is the number nine position. Tottenham lack a proven, prolific goal-scorer in their ranks. Richarlison’s inconsistency in front of goal, combined with Dominic Solanke’s ongoing injury issues, has forced the club to take a proactive stance in the market in search of a reliable striker for the second half of the campaign.
Recent reports suggest that Tottenham have identified FC Porto forward Samu Aghehowa as a potential replacement for Richarlison this winter. The Spanish international has been outstanding in Portugal and is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most promising young strikers. Frank is eager to strengthen his attacking options and is pushing for the Lilywhites to sign the 21-year-old in the coming months.
However, landing Aghehowa may not be as easy as it sounds for Spurs. As per Fichajes, they face stern competition for the prolific striker from London rivals Chelsea. The Blues are prepared to place an offer in excess of €100m for the Spaniard as they aim to bolster the attacking depth in the squad. The injury to Liam Delap has forced Enzo Maresca’s hand to make the #9 position a priority in January.
The aforementioned report also states that Porto are not willing to see their star striker leave the club midway through the season. The Portuguese giants would only accept Samu Aghehowa’s departure if an offer worth €100m or more is put in by any potential suitor in the coming months.
Given that, splashing the majority of their January budget on a single player may not be the wisest move for Tottenham. Instead, the Lilywhites should consider alternative short-term solutions until the summer. Thomas Frank is reportedly interested in reuniting with Ivan Toney on a temporary loan deal. A short-term signing of this nature would allow Spurs to maintain their attacking momentum and strengthen their chances of building on last season’s Europa League success.
