Chelsea have addressed growing rumours about Cole Palmer’s health, with the club now providing a clear update on the recent talk of possible surgery.

It’s been a tough season physically for Palmer, who has missed 19 games in total through various injuries, including thigh, groin, and even a toe injury picked up at home.

Despite these setbacks, he’s shown plenty of resilience. Even Liam Rosenior had his doubts early on, though those concerns about Palmer’s attitude have since faded. He’s been given more responsibility this season and has responded well to it.

Nine goals and three assists is a decent return given how often he’s been in and out of the side. Now he’ll be looking to stay fit and put together a consistent run of form.

Chelsea sources, speaking to BBC Sport both on and off the record, have dismissed any suggestions that Cole Palmer needs surgery.

Palmer has dealt with groin problems across two separate spells, which he’s tried to manage by spending time training with his cousin. The situation got worse recently, which is where the speculation began.

Even while carrying these issues, Palmer has earned steady praise for his performances. Gary Neville also pointed out that Palmer spends a lot of time operating between the lines rather than staying wide right. Despite the tweaks and challenges in his game, there’s been little negative talk about his impact.

What tends to linger, though, is the feeling that another minor injury could always be around the corner. And while club staff don’t think it’s a major issue now, they’ll no doubt be watching closely if anything else crops up soon.

Should Cole Palmer undergo surgery?

Deciding whether or not Cole Palmer needs surgery for his groin issue is a balance between keeping him available now and thinking about the bigger picture for his career. Chelsea’s medical team, along with manager Liam Rosenior, have taken a cautious route, saying there’s no need for surgery at this point. However, Palmer has still missed about 40% of the season so far.

The biggest concern is how long he’d be out if he did go under the knife. Even a minor procedure could sideline him for three months or more, which would rule him out for the rest of Chelsea’s season and could also put his spot in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad at risk ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Right now, Chelsea seem happy to manage his workload during busy stretches. But if these issues keep popping up into spring, they might have to consider shutting him down until he can get surgery over the summer.
