Chelsea were held to a draw in their West London derby against Brentford, and Mark Clattenburg pointed to a significant officiating mistake during the match.
Enzo Maresca’s side appeared to have recovered from a poor start after goals from Cole Palmer and Moises Caicedo put them 2-1 ahead in the second half.
The Blues made several changes to their line-up, and Jamie Redknapp questioned the decision to play Wesley Fofana at right-back following their slow start.
But just when they looked on course for three points, Fabio Carvalho struck from a long throw-in, sending the home crowd into wild celebrations.
Even though Maresca did not raise any issues post-match, plenty of Chelsea fans argued online that Brentford’s second goal should have been ruled out.
Dango Ouattara was in an offside position when he attempted to connect with the flick-on from the throw-in.
Speaking exclusively to The Chelsea Chronicle, Mark Clattenburg said the forward’s involvement was enough to warrant an offside call, even without touching the ball.
“Dango Ouattara is in an offside position when the ball is flicked on after the throw-in. Even though he doesn’t touch the ball, he clearly moves towards it and interferes with a defender’s ability to play the ball therefore he is interfering with play, that’s offside,” he explained
Had they seen it through for all three points, Chelsea would have gone top of the table. Early season officiating has already become a talking point just a few games into the campaign.
Enzo Maresca could have faced a rough start to the season when Chelsea took on Crystal Palace in their opening fixture.
Eberechi Eze had a free-kick ruled out due to interference with the defensive wall, a rule that is not widely known among fans.
Chelsea then benefited from another tight decision against West Ham, where a marginal offside prevented the Hammers from regaining the lead before the Blues pulled away for a 5-1 win.
In their most recent match, PGMOL apologised to Fulham after Josh King had a goal disallowed during Chelsea’s 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.
