The race to capture Mike Maignan on a free transfer has already started, as Milan will struggle to mend fences with his entourage, but Chelsea, which came fairly close to signing him last summer, haven’t been active lately, Fabrizio Romano reports (via CalcioNews24).

The Blues had reached an agreement on personal terms with the goalie, but not with the Rossoneri. They eventually took him off the market despite his contractual situation. The Premier League sides had offered €15M, which was too low for the counterparty.

At this stage, there have been no new contacts between Chelsea and Maignan. The Pensioners could continue to lean on Robert Sanchez, who has been reliable this campaign. They spent €25M for Filip Jorgensen last summer. They also have some starlets waiting in the wings too.

According to Calciomercato, Juventus will be in the mix, while Bayern Munich are wondering whether to re-up with Manuel Neuer, who will turn 40 in March. They’ll join the race if they decide to sign a new shot-stopper.

Rossoneri director Igli Tare recently revealed a gentleman’s agreement with the player and his camp. They concurred to focus on the matches without putting pressure on each other regarding the contract, postponing any decision and negotiation.

Our Take on Chelsea and Maignan

His recent performances have put him back on the map as one of the best specialists in the world after a couple of down years. If he really departs on a Bosman move, only a few select teams would be in a good enough spot at the position not to take a swing at trying to onboard him.
