West Ham are reportedly keeping an eye on Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos, and the Blues’ position on a potential move has become clearer.
Santos spent last season on loan at Strasbourg, where he impressed enough to earn a spot in Chelsea’s first-team squad for the current campaign.
He has missed some time this season due to injury but returned to the starting line-up for the 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest.
Even before making his competitive debut for Chelsea, there was already plenty of interest in him. Several clubs were looking to bring him in, given the depth of talent currently at Stamford Bridge.
Santos is a name that has been linked to West Ham, who know they need reinforcements after a rough start to the season.
The midfielder is on the Hammers’ radar, but Chelsea are not interested in letting him go, according to Ben Jacobs.
The journalist revealed: “Nuno has asked for more pace in midfield, a six or eight who can get box to box, and I’m told that Kobbie Mainoo is still liked by West Ham if Manchester United let him leave. Morten Frendrup at Genoa and Andrey Santos at Chelsea are two other players, but as far as Chelsea are concerned, Santos isn’t for sale.”
Mainoo has also been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in the past, although he is clearly not high up on Ruben Amorim’s list at Old Trafford.
Having joined the first-team in West London, Santos has swiftly made a strong impression.
Recently, Estevao Willian hailed Santos, with the pair already showing promise together for both club and country.
Even with Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, and Romeo Lavia ahead of him in the pecking order, Enzo Maresca has not hesitated to call on Santos when needed.
Given Fernandez’s links to Real Madrid and Lavia’s persistent injury issues, he should have ample opportunities for regular playtime in the coming months.
