Chicago Fire FC acquire Johan Gómez from Eintracht Braunschweig

Major League Soccer’s transfer deadline is fast approaching and the Chicago Fire are continuing to add to their squad for the 2026 season and beyond as the club is in win-now mode. 

The Chicago Fire signed former United States youth international Johan Gómez from Eintracht Braunschweig in the 2. Bundesliga, the second tier of men’s professional soccer in Germany. Gómez, 25, is under contract with the Chicago Fire through at least the 2028-2029 season with a club option for 2029-2030. 

“We’re excited to add a player of Johan’s caliber to the club,” said Chicago Fire FC director of football and head coach Gregg Berhalter. “To have already accumulated more than 100 appearances in Germany at his age speaks to both his quality and consistency. His versatility gives us valuable flexibility across multiple positions, and we believe he will strengthen the group as we continue building a competitive roster.”

Gomez, who began his youth career with the FC Dallas Academy and won USL League One with North Texas SC before making the move to Portuguese reserve side FC Porto B in August 2019. Gomez signed with German side FSV Zwickau in July 2021 and made 69 appearances for the 3. Liga side before joining Eintracht Braunschweig in the second tier before the 2023-2024 2. Bundesliga season. Gomez appeared in 99 matches in all competitions and scored four times over his three-plus seasons with Eintracht Braunschweig. 

Gómez has the ability to operate at multiple spots on the right wing and brings a dynamic skillset into a roster that needs strong depth pieces as they prepare for what the Chicago Fire hope is a long postseason run.
