Italy international Federico Chiesa’s hopes of getting more playing time at Liverpool have taken a big hit with news he was dropped from their Champions League squad.

The attacking winger had a frustrating first season at Anfield, making very few appearances due to injuries and poor form, on the pitch for 14 games, contributing two goals and two assists.

Chiesa won’t get much playing time at Liverpool

He was tempted to walk away this summer with interest from several clubs, including in Serie A, but insisted that he would be able to earn his place in Arne Slot’s squad.

That job just got a lot harder with news Liverpool left Chiesa out of their list of players who can compete in the Champions League opening phase.

He turns 28 next month and has made three Premier League appearances already this season, albeit only for a total of 29 minutes on the pitch, scoring a goal.

Because he did not feel 100 per cent fit, Chiesa asked not to be called up for new Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso’s first matches in charge.
