Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is under some pressure ahead of the trip to Southampton

Tottenham Hotspur travel to Southampton this weekend in the Premier League as they look to end their recent slump in form.

The Lilywhites have won just once in their last eight games across all competitions. This has seen them drop to the bottom half of the Premier League table and out of the Europa League’s automatic knockout round places. They drew 1-1 with Rangers at the Ibrox, which further increased scrutiny on Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs now shift their focus towards their Premier League duties, and with the squad severely hit with injuries and suspensions, not many supporters will feel confident heading into the game at the St Mary’s Stadium.

One positive for Tottenham though is that Southampton have only won one league match this season and they are bottom of the table, eight points adrift of safety. Nonetheless, Ange Postecoglou’s side just cannot take the Saints for granted.

Despite all the doom and gloom surrounding Tottenham, former Premier League striker Chris Sutton believes that Postecoglou and Co. will just edge Southampton 2-1. With both sides struggling for form and points, he thinks it should be “a great game of football”.

“This should be a great game of football,” Chris Sutton told BBC Sport.

“It’s one for the purists, really, because Southampton will play their defined style under Russell Martin and Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham will definitely do the same.

“Both managers have been criticised recently and some of the stuff written and said about Postecoglou after Spurs lost to Chelsea was staggering, although it is the same after every defeat.

“As I said on the Monday Night Club, on their day Spurs are the best team to watch in the Premier League, but they are just patchy.”

With so many players out of action, it will be a massive challenge for Tottenham to get the better of Southampton. Big Ange has players with individual quality but they will have to click as a unit to collect a much-needed victory at the South Coast.

In Tyler Dibling, Cameron Archer, Kyle Walker-Peters and Adam Armstrong to name some, Russell Martin also has good players in his squad who can win matches single-handedly. While on paper Spurs may long stronger than the Saints, the Big Ange-managed side’s record on their travels makes for grim reading.

Thus, Tottenham players have to work extremely hard on Sunday to get a much-needed win and end their slump.
