Former Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed while playing for Denmark against Ukraine, before appearing conscious and able to walk into an ambulance at the stadium.
In a Denmark match in June 2021, Eriksen collapsed on the pitch, suffering a cardiac arrest in a European Championship match against Finland. The 34-year-old has now collapsed once again, this time against Ukraine in a friendly match.
After a delay, during which Denmark players formed a circle around Eriksen, who managed to walk into an ambulance, the referee blew for full time early with the Danes leading 2-1.
An official update from Denmark’s X account reads, ‘Christian Eriksen is conscious and doing well under the circumstances. The match has been called off.’
It’s a scary moment, after Eriksen’s collapse five years ago which shook the footballing world. In 2021, Eriksen was stretchered away and taken to hospital, before being fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator, a specialized type of device that functions as a pacemaker and a mini-defibrillator.
Following a full recovery, Italian medical regulations meant Eriksen could not play in the Serie A while wearing the device. This led to his departure from AC Milan, before the former Tottenham Hotspur hero joined Brentford.
After a second-half of the season stint at the Gtech Community Stadium, where Eriksen played 11 times, the Dane went on to play for Manchester United from July 2022 to the end of the 2024/2025 season. He made 107 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring eight goals.
Eriksen then joined Wolfsburg last summer, and has played 34 times for the German club up until now.
Everybody in the footballing world will be wishing for positive news as to the health of Eriksen, after the encouraging signs that he was well enough to walk into an ambulance after the collapse happened.
