Tottenham beat West Ham convincingly despite a questionably ruled-out goal

Tottenham emerged from the West Ham game unscathed after a solid performance from Thomas Frank’s men. The Lilywhites were expected to face a confident Hammers side ready to put the north London club on the back foot from the first minute. However, Spurs stuck to their game plan and returned with the three points rather comfortably.

The Lilywhites secured a 3–0 win away from home, with three unlikely players on the scoresheet. The first goal came from a Pape Matar Sarr header, courtesy of a perfect corner from Xavi Simons. The north London club followed that up with a sublime strike by Lucas Bergvall immediately after West Ham were reduced to ten men.

To put the cherry on the cake, Micky van de Ven also found the net for Spurs to cap a perfect weekend. The solid performance against the Hammers saw Frank’s men go joint top of the Premier League, behind local rivals Arsenal on goal difference.

Thomas Frank believes Tottenham had a fair goal ruled out

Tottenham still left the London Stadium with all three points despite having a goal ruled out for an apparent push by Micky van de Ven. The Dutchman allegedly pushed a West Ham player during a corner before Cristian Romero rose to head the ball into the back of the net. The goal was instantly chalked off for the infringement, but many questions were raised about the decision.

Even Thomas Frank questioned the decision, indicating that the referee and the VAR made a mistake. Speaking in his post-match presser (via Football.london), Frank said,

“I think the disallowed goal is for me clearly a goal. When I look back it’s Mads Hermansen who pushed Micky into Kyle Walker-Peters and we talk about higher thresholds. For me it’s a clear goal.”

The Spurs manager added,

“If you see the United goal against Fulham a few weeks ago where there were two hands in the back, it was given. I’ve heard afterwards it was a mistake, but no matter what, for higher thresholds this is clearly a goal that needs to stand.”

Thomas Frank believes that Cristian Romero’s disallowed goal was an incorrect decision by the referee. The Danish tactician pointed out that Van de Ven was pushed by a West Ham player, forcing him into another opponent. He also reminded the press of an incident in Fulham’s game against Manchester United where a similar challenge was allowed, highlighting why he believed the officials were wrong to rule out Romero’s header.

Thankfully, the questionable decision did not prove costly, as Spurs secured all three points in their bid to challenge at the top end of the Premier League table. Focus now turns to the upcoming Champions League game for Frank’s men, where anything less than a home win would be seen as a disappointing result.
