Ask the average soccer fan the question of whether they support their club or country first, and the answer is usually the club. Undoubtedly, international soccer teams get plenty of support in the World Cup and even qualifying games, but fans usually watch their club teams. At any rate, the gap between international and club teams may not be especially great.

Jose Mourinho put this into context before the 2010 Champions League final at a press conference, proclaiming that the Champions League final was the biggest game in soccer. Mourinho suggested that the Champions League final had the best two teams in the game, and not the World Cup final. That those club teams of Bayern Munich and Inter Milan were better than their national teams.

Is Club Soccer Really Better Than International Soccer?

Firstly, the obvious contrast between national and club soccer is that club sides can include foreign players. While some leagues put a limit on the number of foreign players a team can have, others only have minimal limits that apply to players outside of the EU. The biggest clubs can recruit a greater variety of players to their sides than the national team.

In the European leagues, some may say that the best club team in the country is better than the national team, particularly their fans. So, Liverpool, Barcelona, and Inter Milan are better than England, Spain, and Italy. Let us consider for one moment that these clubs have players such as Salah, Raphinha, and Lautaro Martínez who can not play for the national teams of their clubs. With such world-class talent, there is good reason to consider that they could beat their English, Spanish, and Italian national teams.

While the club game in Europe is very strong, it is not the same elsewhere. The South American club sides, for example, do not have the same level of financial resources as their European counterparts. They tend to rely more on their own national players than foreign players. Then, most of their best national players play in Europe. Thus, the South American international teams may be better than their club alternatives.

End Of My Club Vs. International Soccer Comparison Rant

So, the best comparison to the FIFA World Cup is Champions League soccer. The Champions League features many of the best players in the FIFA World Cup, and so it is the best alternative. Still, it is often said that the greatest soccer teams are those that win the World Cup, such as Brazil in 1970, West Germany, etc.
