Crewe Alexandra officially sign former Manchester United striker

Manchester United have continued to reshape their squad ahead of the new season.

The Reds have already been active in the transfer market, bringing in new additions while also allowing a number of players to move on.

There has also been plenty of movement among United’s outgoing players as the club looks to create more room within the squad.

With the new season approaching, several former Reds are also preparing for fresh challenges elsewhere.

One of those players has now secured his next move after spending the past two seasons in the Championship.

Former Manchester United striker signs for Crewe Alexandra

Former Manchester United striker Charlie McNeill has joined Crewe Alexandra on a season-long loan from Sheffield Wednesday, as the club announced on their website.

The 22-year-old made 50 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday across two seasons, scoring 6 goals, and will now spend the 2026/27 campaign with Crewe.

McNeill’s route to senior football has been anything but straightforward, as he initially came through at Manchester United before moving to Manchester City, where he established himself as a prolific goalscorer and earned England youth caps.

United brought him back to Old Trafford in October 2020 for a reported £750,000, giving the striker another opportunity to develop at the club where he had started his youth career.

Despite his impressive record at youth level, Charlie McNeill made just one official first-team appearance for United, coming against Real Sociedad in the Europa League, without scoring.

His academy numbers were considerably more impressive, including 24 goals during his first season at Under-18 level, as he continued to build a reputation as a natural goalscorer.

After loan spells with Newport and Stevenage, McNeill left United permanently in 2024 and joined Sheffield Wednesday.

Now, he will be hoping his move to Crewe can provide another opportunity to find consistency and continue his career in senior football.
