Cristiano Ronaldo becomes first $1 billion soccer player

Juventus and Portugal soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo has become the first soccer player, and first athlete in a team sport, to earn over $1 billion in his career, according to Forbes.

Ronaldo ranks fourth on Forbes' list of highest-paid celebrities behind Kylie Jenner, Kanye West and Roger Federer. He beat out Barcelona's Lionel Messi by one spot.

The 35-year-old made an estimated $105 million before taxes, and the only other athletes in the top 10 were Paris Saint-Germain's Neymar and Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James. The only other soccer player on the list was Liverpool's Mohamed Salah who was No. 100.

Ronaldo is just the third active athlete to earn over $1 billion in his career, joining Floyd Mayweather and Tiger Woods, Forbes added.

The world's top soccer star is the most-followed person on Instagram with over 200 million followers and earned $2.3 million for four sponsored posts on the platform during Serie A's hiatus.

While he profits off his soccer salary and sponsorships, Ronaldo also makes money off his CR7 lifestyle brand, hotel and a museum in Madiera.

Before the 2020 campaign was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic, Ronaldo tallied 21 goals while helping Juventus hold the first spot in Serie A. The Italian soccer league will resume in June run through at least August.
