Cristiano Ronaldo arrived at Manchester United as a boy with dancing feet and left his first spell as the best player in the world.

Signed from Sporting CP in 2003, Ronaldo transformed an unpredictable winger into a devastating goalscorer under Sir Alex Ferguson.

He won three Premier League titles, the Champions League and his first Ballon d’Or before joining Real Madrid in 2009.

His return to Old Trafford in 2021 added another chapter, taking his united total to 145 goals.

At 41, Ronaldo remains one of football’s most recognisable figures.

His extraordinary social-media reach means almost every development surrounding him travels around the world within minutes.

The spotlight has intensified during a turbulent international break.

Ronaldo started Portugal’s 1-0 win over Wales before remaining on the bench against Norway, with reports claiming he was unhappy afterwards.

He later missed training before leaving Portugal’s camp in Copenhagen following talks involving Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proenca.

The situation has now taken another dramatic turn.

Cristiano Ronaldo faces suspension

A Bola reports that Ronaldo risks a suspension lasting between one and six months after leaving Portugal’s training camp.

The potential punishment comes under Article 160 of the Portuguese Football Federation’s disciplinary regulations.

It covers a player who, after being properly called up, unjustifiably abandons or fails to attend training, a match or another national-team activity.

Under those rules, a professional player can receive a suspension of between one and six months alongside a financial penalty of roughly €500 to €1,000.

The regulation also provides for an automatic provisional suspension following an absence or departure.

Ronaldo and the federation had both confirmed his departure from camp.

The episode comes despite an extraordinary Portugal career spanning more than two decades.

Ronaldo has accumulated a record 234 caps and 146 goals, while captaining his country to Euro 2016 glory and Nations League triumphs in 2019 and 2025.

From Old Trafford prodigy to Portugal’s record-breaker, Cristiano Ronaldo has spent his career under the brightest lights. Now, those lights illuminate an altogether different battle.
