The international future of Cristiano Ronaldo has been clarified after Portugal’s newly appointed head coach addressed the long-standing uncertainty surrounding the veteran forward.
The 41-year-old’s future has been one of the biggest talking points since Portugal’s 1-0 Round of 16 defeat to Spain at the 2026 World Cup raised fresh questions over whether he would continue representing his country.
Although Ronaldo later revealed that he intends to continue playing for Portugal beyond the tournament, attention quickly turned towards whether the nation’s next manager would continue selecting him.
That uncertainty increased after manager Roberto Martinez stepped down.
However, Jorge Jesus was recently appointed as Portugal’s new manager.
The 71-year-old will reunite with Ronaldo after the pair enjoyed success together at Al-Nassr.
As reported by GOAL, Jesus has made it clear that Cristiano Ronaldo remains firmly in his plans despite turning 41 earlier this year.
The experienced coach explained that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner will continue to be selected for Portugal as long as he is playing at the required level and remains available for international duty.
Jesus also stressed that Ronaldo’s role will be managed according to what he believes is best for the national team.
He described the former Manchester United star as a symbol of Portuguese football and an influential figure inside the dressing room.
The new Portugal boss also dismissed suggestions that managing a player of Ronaldo’s stance could create difficulties.
Reflecting on their successful spell together at Al-Nassr, Jesus insisted that he thoroughly enjoyed working with the legendary forward and described him as easy to manage.
Portugal are now preparing for the next stage of their rebuild following World Cup disappointment, with Nations League fixtures on the horizon before attention turns towards the road to the 2030 World Cup, which Portugal will co-host alongside Spain and Morocco.
Jesus’ early backing of Ronaldo provides immediate clarity over one of the biggest questions facing the national team as a new era begins.
