Cristiano Ronaldo turned 41 this year and still hasn't given anyone a reason to write him off. While most players his age are long retired or winding down in obscurity, Ronaldo is heading into a sixth World Cup.

He scored five goals during Portugal's qualifying campaign to help them punch their ticket to the 2026 tournament being held across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

A hamstring injury did sideline him for a stretch of club fixtures with Al Nassr but according to soccer reporter Fabrizio Romano, Ronaldo is back available for his club and set to return to the Portugal squad as well. The recovery outlook is positive and his place in the squad was never really in question.

Portugal got through their recent warm-up matches against Mexico and the United States without him but his absence didn't change the bigger picture. Ronaldo holds the men's international scoring record with 143 goals across 226 appearances since his debut back in 2003 and at 41 he remains the central figure around which this Portugal side is built.

Manager Roberto Martinez has been straightforward about where Ronaldo stands heading into the tournament, per ESPN. His value to the squad is not just about what he's done, it's about what he still does every single day.

Martinez made it clear this is not a situation where a veteran is being managed carefully through his final chapter. Ronaldo still pushes standards in training, still demands more from himself and still sets the tone as captain in a way that goes beyond reputation or experience.

What stands out most according to the Portugal manager is the effect that mentality has on the rest of the group. Younger players aren't just training alongside one of the greatest to ever play the game.

They're watching someone who leads through daily habits and holds the squad's standards up simply by showing up the way he does. That consistency across attitude and preparation keeps lifting the environment around the team.

With the 2026 World Cup on home soil for North America, Portugal arrives as a genuine contender. And Ronaldo, even at this stage, remains at the center of it all.
