Cristiano Ronaldo has reached the final page of an international story that once seemed destined to run forever.

For more than two decades, Portugal had Ronaldo.

The teenager with dancing feet became the captain, the goalscorer and eventually the enduring face of a footballing nation.

He carried the armband when Portugal finally conquered Europe in 2016, ending a wait for a first major international trophy.

Nations League triumphs followed in 2019 and 2025.

Manchester United supporters watched much of that evolution unfold.

Sir Alex Ferguson signed a fearless 18-year-old from Sporting in 2003.

Ronaldo left Old Trafford six years later as a Ballon d’Or winner, European champion and one of football’s defining superstars.

Even at 41, the ending arrived suddenly.

Ronaldo had previously confirmed that the 2026 World Cup would be his last. CentreDevils reported his admission in July, although he initially continued with Portugal after their tournament exit.

That changed dramatically this week. Ronaldo left Portugal’s camp in Copenhagen following talks with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proenca.

He subsequently released a statement confirming his departure from the camp, but stopped short of announcing international retirement himself.

Cristiano Ronaldo will not play for Portugal again

Now, O Jogo reports that Ronaldo has made an irreversible decision and will never represent Portugal again.

The Portuguese publication states that his appearance against Wales at the Estadio Jose Alvalade was therefore his final game for his country.

Ronaldo started that Nations League fixture before being replaced by Goncalo Ramos as Portugal secured a 1-0 victory.

He was subsequently left on the bench throughout the 2-1 win against Norway as Jorge Jesus began making significant selection decisions.

Ronaldo later departed the national-team camp after meeting Proenca and promised that he would eventually explain the reasons behind his decision.

There will be no final tournament and no carefully choreographed farewell.

After more than two decades in Portuguese red, an era is over.
