Cristiano Ronaldo reverses retirement decision

Cristiano Ronaldo has casted fresh doubt over his international retirement plans following Portugal’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup.

Just yesterday, widespread expectation was that the 41-year-old had played his final World Cup match after Portugal suffered a heart-breaking 1-0 Round of 16 defeat to Spain.

Earlier in the tournament, Ronaldo’s sister Katia Aveiro had described the competition as his “last dance” with Portugal, while the forward himself confirmed after the Spain defeat that it had been his final World Cup.

However, Cristiano Ronaldo has now made it clear that he is not yet ready ready to retire from international football.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the former Manchester United star has confirmed he intends to continue representing Portugal beyond the 2026 World Cup, with his sights now set on UEFA Euro 2028.

Speaking after Portugal’s elimination, Ronaldo admitted the defeat was painful.

However, he insisted that he leaves the tournament with a clear conscience.

“Spain had a bit of luck and scored at the end. Football is like that,” he said.

“It’s sad to go out of the World Cup like this, but as I said yesterday I gave everything. I gave my best and I leave with a clear conscience.”

Ronaldo confirmed this was his final World Cup, but stressed he has not finished with Portugal.

“It is true that it was my last World Cup, yes, but for the rest I will have time to think. I’ll speak with my family. There’s no need to make decisions in the heat of the moment.”

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner added that representing Portugal remains something special after 23 years in the national team.

“For me, the national team is something special. I’ve played for Portugal for 23 years and every time I wear this shirt it’s an incredible experience.”

La Gazzetta also report that Ronaldo could welcome a familiar face if Roberto Martinez departs.

For now, Ronaldo will return to Al-Nassr before continuing his pursuit of the 1,000-goal milestone, while keeping the door open to extending one of international football’s greatest careers.
