Liverpool are thriving on all four fronts, showcasing unity and cohesion under Arne Slot’s revolutionary approach. The Reds secured a vital 2-1 victory over Southampton to progress in the League Cup, with Darwin Nunez finding the back of the net.

The Uruguayan striker ended his eight-game goal drought in style, expertly controlling a misplaced clearance from Jan Bednarek before calmly slotting the ball past Alex McCarthy to hand Liverpool the lead.

Rumours had been swirling about Darwin Nunez’s future at Liverpool, with speculation that the striker might be sold if he didn’t start delivering goals. The pressure was mounting on the former Benfica star to prove his worth and secure his place at Anfield beyond this season.

While Nunez did silence some critics by scoring a crucial goal, he still managed to frustrate Liverpool’s coaching staff. Despite having a solid game overall, moments of error are inevitable in top-flight football, and even a good performance can leave room for improvement.

Liverpool coaches left frustrated by Nunez’s lapse during Southampton throw-In

Darwin Nunez’s season has been underwhelming so far, with the striker contributing just seven goals. During Liverpool’s clash against Southampton, Nunez drew criticism from stand-in manager Sipke Hulshoff and coach Aaron Briggs. According to Lewis Steele of the Daily Mail, the coaches were visibly frustrated with Nunez for failing to defend a Southampton throw-in. Steele noted on X that the duo were “barking at him” to position himself inside the penalty area to defend the long throw, highlighting the coaches’ dissatisfaction with his positioning.
With Arne Slot watching from the stands, Nunez is well aware that a post-match discussion could be on the horizon. The Uruguayan striker understands the high standards Slot demands from his players, and moments like this will not go unnoticed by the Dutch coach.

Nunez is well aware that he’ll need a dramatic turnaround to remain a Liverpool player heading into Slot’s second season in charge.

Nunez is still striving to prove he can be Liverpool’s main man up front. His goal on Thursday was a step in the right direction, but with competition from Diogo Jota intensifying, the Uruguayan knows he must maintain his goalscoring form to secure his place in the squad for next season.
