Inter Miami fans are worried about Lionel Messi's future as his contract expires at the end of the 2025 season. At the moment, Messi has not yet renewed his contract with the MLS club, but co-owner David Beckham is confident that the Argentine star will stay past 2025.
In an interview with Time Magazine for TIME100 Philanthropy, Beckham assured that Messi is happy in Miami and explained why he thinks the player will eventually extend his contract with Inter Miami.
David Beckham: I think his [Lionel Messi] heart is in Miami now. Players these days, they look after themselves more. They’re playing longer. His number one passion is obviously his family. His other passion is football. As long as he’s happy, he will continue to play as long as he wants. It would be nice if he played another 10 years. I can’t see it. But you never know.”
In the same interview, Beckham explained how he didn't expect to bring Messi to the club two years ago. Messi joined Inter Miami in the summer of 2023 and signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with 'The Herons'.
David Beckham: "I could never have dreamed to have Lionel [Messi] here. As an owner, you always say that you want the best players. Does it really happen? No. And he is the best player to have ever played the game."

Beckham believes that Messi will be playing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup next year. Many soccer fans hope to see the Argentine play in another World Cup despite him being 37 and turning 38 on June 24.
Rumors of Messi halting contract extension talks with Inter Miami, many speculate the player may either join another club or retire and hang up the boots. Messi's retirement from soccer seems impossible for players close to him, as the World Cup is a year away.
In an interview with Los Edul, Enzo Fernandez was asked if he believes that Messi will play in the upcoming World Cup, delaying his retirement. Fernandez spoke with confidence that Messi will be a part of the Argentina squad for the upcoming World Cup.
Enzo Fernandez: "Yes, I'm completely confident. Honestly, I can't imagine Argentina without Messi, and I don't think the world can imagine him either. He's our leader, an unrepeatable person, not only for what he does on the pitch, but for his personality and great humility off it. I hope with all my heart that we can all go to the World Cup, and that he'll be with us to fight for the title again. It would be great to experience that adventure together."
One of the reasons fans speculate that Messi has yet to renew his contract with Inter Miami is due to the previous performances of the team. Inter Miami has struggled under Javier Mascherano, and it has been the worst period of the team since Messi has been there.
Inter Miami is sixth in the Eastern Conference in the MLS. After 13 games played, the 'Herons' have 22 points with six wins, four draws, and three losses. They are seven points behind first-place Philadelphia Union.
Messi has played ten MLS games this season. He has scored five goals and provided two assists. Inter Miami suffered a 3-0 loss to Orlando City at home last weekend.
This weekend, Inter Miami will play against the Philadelphia Union, who are undefeated in their last eight games. Inter Miami is winless in their last three, conceding 10 goals.

Messi scored the last time Inter Miami played the Philadelphia Union. This game was on March 31, where Inter Miami defeated Philadelphia Union 2-1 at home. A win against the league leaders could turn things around ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup, which starts on June 14.
