Manchester United have been in the market for a new striker throughout the summer 2025 transfer window, yet they have waited all the way until August to make a concrete approach.
For months, they waffled on Ruben Amorim’s dream reunion, Viktor Gyokeres, who lit up the Primeira Liga and the Champions League with goals, totaling 45 goals between both competitions with a healthy 7 assists in his league to boot.
Gyokeres has since moved to Premier League rivals Arsenal to further strengthen the title contenders, whereas Manchester United are still hunting for an upgrade on Rasmus Hojlund.
At this stage of the transfer window, there aren’t many legitimate options left for Manchester United, because Alexander Isak, for example, only has eyes for reigning champions Liverpool.
Ollie Watkins is one proven option in the Premier League, but Manchester United have begun to focus their efforts on and old Arsenal flame, Benjamin Sesko, who is widely seen as one of the most promising young forwards in world football.
RB Leipzig want to be compensated appropriately, and after resisting a Sesko sale last summer and for the majority of this window, too, they have settled on a price of at least 75 million euros.
Manchester United aren’t the only team involved, though. Chelsea and Arsenal may be out of the race, but the Saudi Arabia-backed Newcastle are just as keen on Sesko as the Red Devils, especially since they already missed out on Hugo Ekitike to Liverpool and now face the prospect of losing Isak to the Reds, too.
According to a new report from The Athletic’s top transfer reporter David Ornstein, Newcastle have just submitted an offer to RB Leipzig that is in line with the Bundesliga giants’ demands, as the Magpies are offering 75 million euros with an additional 5 million euros in bonuses.
That total of 80 million euros is the most robust transfer offer for Sesko to date, and it is up to Manchester United to now match or exceed that offer. Newcastle’s increased interest in Sesko is down to Liverpool pushing for Isak, so the rival Reds could hand Amorim yet another tough transfer blow.
Although Manchester United haven’t been totally lethargic this transfer window and have signed Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to the attack as top secondary scorers with proven Premier League track records to put their team in a significantly better position than they were attacking-wise last season, they still need to complete the attacking quartet with a better No. 9 than Hojlund or Joshua Zirkzee.
RB Leipzig have thrown around the idea of acquiring Hojlund as part of a swap deal for Sesko, and that may be the trump card Manchester United require in order to sway the Red Bull-owned side into selling Sesko to them and not Newcastle.
