Manchester United’s defensive record this season has been under the microscope, with Ruben Amorim keen to bolster his backline to maintain a push for the Premier League’s top spots.

Recent matches have exposed inconsistencies in the Red Devils’ defence, prompting the club to explore potential reinforcements from across Europe.

Elite European clubs continue to showcase the impact of versatile, ball-playing defenders, making the hunt for proven centre-backs increasingly competitive.

With the January transfer window approaching, clubs are already monitoring stars who can provide both defensive stability and attacking support from the back.

Scouts have highlighted several high-profile defenders whose form this season has attracted attention from Europe’s biggest teams.

Among the names now generating serious interest is Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano.

The 27-year-old France international has been linked with a possible move to Manchester United in 2026, as his current contract at the Allianz Arena nears its end.

Dayot Upamecano recently broke his silence on his future, speaking to L’Equipe and quoted by Fabrizio Romano via X: “We’ll make the right decision. I’m well advised.

“I’ve always said I feel comfortable at Bayern. I have a great coach and teammates.

“I’m under contract at Bayern. I’m very grateful if there are clubs interested in me.”

These comments come amid rumours suggesting Real Madrid are also in the running, though Upamecano cannot negotiate pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs until January.

Despite early career mistakes at Bayern, the Frenchman has blossomed into one of the world’s top defenders, contributing five goals and 10 assists across 167 appearances in all competitions.

This season, he has started eight Bundesliga games and four Champions League matches, though Bayern’s 16-match winning streak came to an end in a 2-2 draw against Union Berlin before the international break.

Manchester United will continue to monitor Upamecano’s situation closely, knowing that a potential signing could address their defensive vulnerabilities and provide a leader capable of shaping the backline under Ruben Amorim’s management.
