Diego Luna Sidelines Top USMNT Star - Donovan's Bold World Cup Call

Mauricio Pochettino has a lot on his plate heading into the World Cup. While the Gold Cup might not have ended how the USMNT wanted, the tournament will surely help Pochettino set a blueprint for his playing XI. The ex-Tottenham boss has some great options with his attacking trio and will be forced to pick someone over the other.

With all that is worth, Christian Pulisic is bound to earn his place in one of the three spots. This leaves Pochettino with just two spots, with multiple players gunning for the position. Both Folarin Balogun and Ricardo Pepi would love to end up in the number nine role, with the strikers currently the best option in the current crop.

This leaves just one position open, and if experts are to be believed, Pochettino could be forced to push one of his top men aside to make room for an emerging star.

Donovan picks Diego Luna over Tim Weah

In a quick segment with Fox Sports, USMNT legend Landon Donovan was asked to decide on his front three for the World Cup. The former skipper was quick to name Folarin Balogun as his number nine before adding Christian Pulisic to the right wing.

Donovan then snubbed Tim Weah as he went with emerging star Diego Luna as his preferred left winger. However, Donovan did claim this was just off the rip. Luna has impressed everyone with his recent performances, with the player emerging as one of the top players for Mauricio Pochettino during the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

As days on the calendar keep passing by, fans will hope the manager can lock in his final playing XI as soon as possible before providing them with ample game time to gel before the tournament. With the World Cup taking place on home soil, expectations are at an all-time high, and anything less than a quarter-final spot would not fare well with the supporters.
