All the media spotlight is on Tottenham defender Djed Spence right now, and rightly so. The versatile full-back has successfully managed to revive his Spurs career against all odds. His brilliant form and consistent performances for the Lilywhites has also earned him a new contract extension at N17 earlier last month. This just shows that Thomas Frank rates the 25-year-old highly and considers him a vital part of the team.
Not only that, but Spence also managed to make history by becoming the first Muslim to represent England earlier this week. The Spurs full-back made his national team debut after coming on as a substitute in the Three Lions’ win against Serbia. The defender’s resurgence in form has clearly been highlighted after he managed to become a consistent starter for the North London club.
At one point, it looked like Djed Spence’s Tottenham career was all but over. But the injury crisis at the back last season meant that the Englishman was given a lifeline. And it is fair to say that he took this opportunity with both hands and did not let it go. He cemented his place in the starting eleven under Ange Postecoglou, as well as, Thomas Frank and it does not look like he will be out of the team anytime soon.
Well, Djed Spence’s revival at Tottenham is nothing short of a miracle. His strong start to the season has also meant that he is on course to keep Destiny Udogie out of the team for the time being. The 25-year-old is not showing signs of stopping anytime soon, and fans will hope that he does not become too complacent as the campaign kicks on after the international break.
However, John Wenham has taken the time to praise Djed Spence’s determination as he looks to become a consistent starter for the team. Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham said,
“He (Spence) has had setback after setback, and he’s shown so much resilience and strength to get to where he is now.”
The Lilywhite Rose owner added,
“I put an X post out a couple of days ago saying, who would you pick as your starting left back if Udogie was fully fit and firing? Most people said Spence. So, he’s done amazingly well. This England cap will only continue to boost his confidence.”
John Wenham praises Djed Spence’s ‘resilience and stength’ after the full-back faced numerous setbacks. The Lilywhite Rose owner admits that most Tottenham fans want to see the 25-year-old starting week in week out at left-back, instead of Destiny Udogie, once the Italian recovers from his injury. Wenham also believes that Spence will gain a lot of confidence going forward after earning his first England call-up earlier this week.
Fans will now hope that Djed Spence continues his good form under Thomas Frank as the Lilywhites look all set to build on the Europa League success. The England international will be keen to play consistently week in week out as the Champions League group stage commences in a few weeks’ time.
