Pre-season always brings a flurry of squad list updates at Manchester United, but this year’s shirt number reshuffle carries more significance than most.
Nine players have been handed new numbers ahead of the new season, a reshuffle that touches everyone from senior internationals to academy prospects still years away from a first-team debut.
The most eye-catching change belongs to Marcus Rashford, who has switched from his long-held No. 10 to No. 14 following his return from a loan spell at Barcelona.
Matheus Cunha had already taken on Rashford’s old number during his time away, with the Brazilian wearing it since his arrival from Wolves last year, leaving Rashford to settle on 14 despite having worn the No. 9 shirt for pre-season.
It’s a symbolic moment for Marcus Rashford, whose route back to Old Trafford this summer followed spells away at both Aston Villa and Barcelona as he searched for a return to form after a difficult few years in Manchester.
In goal, Senne Lammens has claimed the No. 1 jersey, moving up from No. 31 after Altay Bayindir’s loan exit to Celta Vigo left the jersey vacant.
The Belgian, signed as United’s long-term successor between the posts, now carries the weight of the club’s most storied shirt number heading into his first full season at Old Trafford.
Beyond the senior pair, seven Carrington prospects have also been handed new numbers as a mark of their progress through the academy, as the Manchester Evening News reports.
Shea Lacey moves from No. 61 to No. 46, Jaydan Kamason switches from 66 to 61, Jacob Devaney goes from 67 to 62, Jim Thwaites moves from 77 to 63, and Daniel Armer switches from 75 to 69.
The most notable of the seven is 15-year-old JJ Gabriel, who jumps from No. 95 to No. 77.
Gabriel has been one of the standout stories to emerge from United’s academy in years, scoring 19 goals in the U18 Premier League last season and becoming the club’s youngest-ever scorer in FA Youth Cup history with a strike on his Old Trafford debut.
He has trained with the first team on numerous occasions and travelled with the senior squad on their pre-season tour, with technical director Jason Wilcox having personally played a role in persuading him to commit his future to the club.
