Tottenham Hotspur will board a flight to Germany as Thomas Frank prepares for another Champions League takedown to overcome the domestic fatalities.
The Dane head coach will go into another game with quite some pressure on his head surrounding his job and then also the pressure to play out the North Londoners’ European future.
Many think that anything less than a win would put Frank at a high possibility of being sacked, especially after that 2-2 draw against Burnley at the weekend.
Going to that Burnley game, many fans thought that Frank’s dismissal was quite inevitable till Cristian Romero popped up late for that equaliser at Turf Moor. It ended up being a goal that brought Frank some more time to prove his credentials.
But still, if we look at the domestic record, it’s a cause of concern. The Lilywhites have only two wins in the last three months in the Premier League. This has pushed them to 14th in the English top-tier table.
But somehow the fortunes are quite different in Europe.
The North Londoners go into the final round of the league stage of Champions League this season sitting fifth, behind only Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Liverpool. This is an elite company to be in, and a win in Frankfurt would likely secure automatic qualification for the round of 16 for the North Londoners, which will avoid that unpredictability of the knockout play-offs (and those extra two games you have to play).
And while we are noting down all the problems at Hotspur Way, Frankfurt are having an equally disastrous season.
The hosts dismissed their manager Dino Toppmöller just about fortnight back. This spelt an end to a three-year time that he spent in Waldstadion. They are winless in over a month in all competitions and come into this game on the back of consecutive defeats. Frankfurt lost to Qarabag (FT 3-2) in the Champions League before a 3-1 home defeat to Hoffenheim at the weekend.
Location: Frankfurt, Germany
Stadium: Deutsche Bank Park
Date: Wednesday, 28 January 2026
Time: Kick-off at 8pm BST
Many Tottenham fans would remember playing Frankfurt in last season’s Europa League quarter-final. Tottenham did go on to lift that trophy after they were held to a 1-1 draw by the German giants in the first leg before they ground out a tense 1-0 win away at Frankfurt in the second leg.
The pair were also part of the same Champions League group in 2022/23. And even then, Tottenham were unbeaten in both games.
Thomas Frank go into yet another game with ample of injury problems to deal with. For this one, he is going to surely be without Ben Davies, Lucas Bergvall, Rodrigo Bentancur, Mohammed Kudus and Richarlison (all of them out with injury).
James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski are also serving the sidelines. But even if they were fit, they are not registered for the Champions League squad.
Speaking about not being registered, the four of Radu Dragusin, Conor Gallagher, Yves Bissouma and Mathys Tel are still not eligible to play in the European top tier for the visitors. All of them are still not in the UCL squad.
Interim head coach Dennis Schmitt will be without five players this midweek with all of Elias Baum, Jonathan Burkardt, Michy Batshuayi, Timothy Chandler and Younes Ebnoutalib struggling with injuries.
Tottenham: Vicario; Spence, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Sarr, Gray, Simons; Odobert, Solanke, Kolo Muani
Frankfurt: Kaua; Collins, Koch, Theate; Kristensen; Skhiri, Chaïbi, Brown; Doan, Uzun, Kalimuendo-Muinga
The defensive duo of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven continues to be the most reliable performers for the Lilywhites. And they are also Tottenham’s biggest goal threats right now (as we saw in the Burnley game as well). And this says everything about how blunt the North Londoners’ attack has been under Thomas Frank.
While on the other end of the spectrum, Frankfurt are 33rd out of 36 in the Champions League table. So a progression for them is already impossible. But they will play for pride with a hostile home atmosphere behind them.
The Lilywhites supporters made their feelings clear after that Burnley draw where chants for Frank’s sacking were echoing the away end. And another slip-up here could well end up having Tottenham out of that top eight. Moreover, it would also almost certainly bring an end to Frank era at N17.
TTLB Prediction: Frankfurt 0 -1 Tottenham
