Manchester United’s summer plans are taking shape, with the club casting a wide net across the Bundesliga – and one Eintracht Frankfurt player has now responded to the growing transfer speculation.
The headline name in the rumour mill is Hugo Ekitike, the reported £85 million striker who only joined Frankfurt in January. United turned their focus to the Frenchman after missing out on Liam Delap and seeing Viktor Gyokeres lean towards Arsenal. But Ekitike isn’t the only Frankfurt player catching United’s eye.
The club have also been linked with young goalkeeper Kaua Santos, though any potential double swoop looks unlikely at this stage.
While United’s striker chase has dominated headlines, questions remain about the future of their No. 1 spot. Andre Onana recently cast some doubt over his position and the club continue to be linked with a number of goalkeepers.
One of those is Kaua Santos, who – despite limited first-team experience – is already valued at around £50 million by Frankfurt.
Speaking to Die Welt (via Sport Witness), the 22-year-old addressed the speculation:
“The people in charge in Frankfurt have shown enormous trust in me. They wanted to continue working with me before these rumours even surfaced.
“They still have a lot of faith in me here, so it was clear to me that I wanted to extend my contract. I want to establish myself as a goalkeeper, perform well, and achieve as much as possible.
“I’m not busy with anything else at the moment, because my entire focus is on Eintracht Frankfurt.”
With Santos now publicly committing his immediate future to Frankfurt, United are likely to look elsewhere for goalkeeper reinforcements this summer. The Brazilian is still early in his senior career, and Frankfurt’s valuation always made a deal unlikely in the short term.
At 22, Santos needs regular playing time to reach his potential, something he’s only just starting to find in Germany. Manchester United, meanwhile, need an experienced player under the posts after Onana struggled to fill that void.
From the Red Devils’ point of view, it seems that they should keep an eye on the Brazilian rather than try to sign him right now. And for Santos, staying put could be the best move for his development. If he continues to impress, United may well return in a year or two. This time, for a keeper who’s fully established at the top level.
