Rodrigo Bentancur might just stay at Tottenham for next season after UCL qualification

Well, the Europa League success might just be the turning point in Tottenham’s history as they ended the 17-year wait for a trophy. The Lilywhites exceeded all expectations to bring silverware back to N17 last week. By doing that, Ange Postecoglou’s men ensured Champions League qualification for next season as well.

However, the Europa League success should not overshadow the existing problems at the club. The Lilywhites have endured a tough domestic campaign and many key players have underperformed. It is clear to see that Spurs need to bring in reinforcements in the summer if they want to close the gap on the rivals next season.

Although many players did not perform to their standards this season, there were a few that played a crucial part in helping Spurs win the Europa League. One of the players that helped the club achieve feat was midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur. The Uruguay international started all the games in the latter stages of the competition and he was a crucial part of Big Ange’s setup.

Tottenham want Rodrigo Bentancur to stay at N17 beyond the summer

Tottenham need to get the decisions regarding the squad right in the summer. The Lilywhites are looking to build on the Europa League success next season and they will need quality players in each department if they want to compete for titles. Many key players are linked with a move away from N17, so the fans will hope that Champions League football for next season would convince them stay at Spurs for the time being.

It was reported earlier that Rodrigo Bentancur was looking to head for pastures new after enduring a good stint at N17. The 27-year-old was linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, and Diego Simeone was keen to land the ex-Juventus star for next season. The aforementioned report had also suggested that Bentancur was keen on the move as he wanted to test himself in a new environment.

But now, Spurs have received a massive boost in their efforts to keep the midfielder at the club. As per Mail Online, the Lilywhites have opened talks with the 27-year-old for a new contract as they aim to keep a hold of their star players in the summer. Rodrigo Bentancur has also hinted on staying at N17 beyond the summer after the North London club secured Champions League football for next season.

However, it is worth noting that Bentancur’s current contract expires next year. So, a breakthrough in negotiations will be needed right now for a contract extension, or else the Lilywhites might face the risk of losing the 27-year-old on a free transfer next season. Fans will hope that Daniel Levy manages to pull the rabbit out of the hat and convinces the midfielder to extend his stay at N17.

The Lilywhites have already lined up replacements in case the Spurs midfielder leaves the club in the coming weeks. Tottenham are linked with a move for Genoa star Morten Frendrup and view him as an ideal player to replace Bentancur at the heart of the midfield. But the North London club cannot afford to waste any more time and need to act quick in the summer.
