England Coach Thomas Tuchel Announces Declan Rice Development Before World Cup
Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

Declan Rice’s incredible year just got even better. After playing a massive role in helping Arsenal win the Premier League for the first time in more than two decades, the England national team midfielder has now received another major piece of recognition ahead of the FIFA World Cup

Thomas Tuchel has confirmed an important personal milestone for Rice, underlining just how central he has become to England’s plans.

The big achievement here being that Rice is now confirmed as the vice-captain of the English national football team for the World Cup.

Tuchel confirmed it saying, “From today, Declan Rice is my vice-captain”. While Rice has his place in the starting 11 confirmed, other big names are still fighting for their place in a squad that is brimming with talent.

Tuchel’s England setup is starting to look less like a team of guaranteed names and more like a real competition for places.

That is where Jude Bellingham now finds himself. He remains one of England’s most talented players, but Tuchel has made it clear that talent and reputation will not automatically put anyone in the first XI. Bellingham is part of the manager’s preferred group, but he is not being treated as untouchable.

Asked whether the Real Madrid midfielder still has work to do to start at the World Cup, Tuchel gave a direct answer. “Yes, he has,” Tuchel said.

The England manager also explained that he sees a larger group of players as genuine starting options, which means Bellingham is competing in a much deeper pool than before.

That is a major change from the previous England setup, where his role felt far more secure. Under Tuchel, Morgan Rogers has become a regular presence, and his consistency has given the manager something to think about.

Bellingham’s recent cameo against New Zealand helped his case. He came on after halftime, wore the captain’s armband, and showed the energy and edge Tuchel likes in him.

So the situation is not that Bellingham is out of favor. It is more that England suddenly have options, and Tuchel wants every player to earn the shirt. For Bellingham, the challenge is simple: prove he belongs in the team from the opening whistle.
