There was no shortage of attention on Manchester United’s contingent as England’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup continued, with place still very much up for grabs heading into the final stretch of the season.

With Thomas Tuchel still assessing his options, every player wants to show why they deserve to be on the plane.

United have three players in that conversation.

England fell to a 1-0 defeat against Japan, with Kobbie Mainoo handed a start, while Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire were introduced in the second half.

Mainoo’s performance drew the most scrutiny, with ratings reflecting a difficult night for the young midfielder.

The Guardian handed him a 4/10 and did not hold back, writing, “Japan’s goal exposed poor defensive instincts.

“At fault for further openings. World Cup hopes over?”

The Mirror took a more balanced view, giving him a 6/10 and noting, “Neat and tidy, nice passing but did not really open up Japan’s defence.”

Meanwhile, The Sun were even more critical, awarding a 3/10 and stating, “Couldn’t eep up with the pace of Japan’s pass-and-move style for the opening goal, and his passing seemed really off, too, he could’ve been at fault for a Japan second were it not for Ezri Konsa.

“He was England’s most combative midfielder and won most of his duels, but it wasn’t the best version of Kobbie Mainoo we have seen in impact games in both phases at the highest level.”

Rashford’s cameo, on the other hand, was received more positively, with The Mirror awarding him a 7/10, while both The Guardian and The Sun settled on a 6/10 rating for the forward.

His situation remains one to watch, with uncertainty still surrounding his long-term future after Barcelona passed the deadline to sign him permanently.

Maguire also earned steady marks across the board, receiving 6/10 ratings.

With seven league games remaining for Manchester United, the focus shifts back to club football.
