England’s path to the summer World Cup continued on Friday evening, with Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford both featuring as the Three Lions drew 1-1 with Uruguay in a friendly.
Thomas Tuchel’s side came into the fixture off the back of a perfect qualifying campaign for the upcoming tournament which saw them win all eight games.
This included matches against Serbia, Albania, Latvia, and other national teams.
In the game against Uruguay on Friday evening, Ben White scored late in the second half to give England the lead before Federico Valverde equalised from the spot in the fourth minute of added time.
Both Maguire and Rashford started the game, with the defender playing the full ninty minutes whilst the left-sided attacker was substituted after 69 minutes for Harvey Barnes.
The English media have now been expressing their reaction to both player’s reaction, as they dissect the draw and its conclusions.
The Guardian stated that Harry Maguire was: “solid on his return to the international scene” whilst also adding that he made “some booming passes and a set-piece threat.”
Commenting on Marcus Rashford, the publication took a slightly more negative tone explaining that the Barcelona loanee “livened up the crowd with one run but mostly dribbled down dead ends.”
The Telegraph also rated the game with Maguire given a seven out of ten whilst the outlet added that the defender “played on the front foot and showed his range of passing. Two blocks in stoppage-time to save goals.”
Rashford’s performance was then given a six out of ten whilst The Telegraph explaining that the 28-year-old had an “exciting run late in the first half and he always tried to be positive. Another one who took heavy challenges from Uruguay players.”
The Mirror also looked to comment on the Manchester United duo with Maguire “reliable as ever” according to the publication in their seven out of ten rating.
Positivity was also expressed with commenting on Rashford with the outlet explaining that the 28-year-old was “bright, fast and out to entertain.
They also added that the Barcelona loanee looked “determined to win a starting place” whilst giving him a seven out of ten rating.
Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford were not the only two players relating to Manchester United playing, however, with former Red Devil James Garner also making his debut for the Three Lions.
The Guardian took caution when reacting to the 25-year-old’s performance stating: “The Everton midfielder delivered some dangerous corners and did not disgrace himself on his debut.”
The Telegraph were more positive in their six out of ten rating explaining that the midfielder showed “good defensive work with interceptions, which twice set up chances for Solanke by pinching the ball in a dangerous area.”
The Mirror also added a positive spin as they explaining how Garner “took responsibility for set-pieces and looked eager to impress” in their seven out of ten rating.
All three players could now play in England’s upcoming friendly against Japan on Tuesday evening as they look to strengthen their cases for a World Cup place.
