Everton sit 14th after eight Premier League matches, with 10 points from two wins, four draws and two defeats. David Moyes has overseen a busy midfield rebuild since the summer, adding Hayden Hackney, Christian Nørgaard and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, while Merlin Röhl’s loan became permanent. James Garner has started every league game, and Harrison Armstrong has also featured in all eight, giving Moyes dependable options despite the side’s uneven results.
Hackney, contracted until 2031, offers long-term value, while Garner’s deal runs to 2030. Nørgaard brings experience, although he has played only once in the league so far. Everton have a settled core, but another young defensive midfielder could strengthen their depth and give the recruitment team a longer-term option behind the established starters.
Moyes needs midfielders who can protect the defence, cover ground and help Everton move forward quickly after winning possession. Garner and Hackney already provide energy and technical quality, while Armstrong’s emergence gives the manager another young option. However, a defensive specialist could give those players greater freedom to press higher without leaving the back four exposed during transitions.
That search has reportedly taken the club to Sweden. Sport Witness, citing Africa Foot, says Everton are among several British sides tracking BK Häcken midfielder Abdoulaye Doumbia, alongside Celtic, Sunderland and Coventry City. Bayer Leverkusen, Nice, Lens, Freiburg and Club Brugge are also monitoring the 19-year-old, while Wolves, Strasbourg and Rennes showed interest earlier this year.
The Ivorian has made a strong impression since joining Häcken from ASEC Mimosas in January. Across 28 matches, he has played 2,389 minutes, scored twice and provided three assists. His reported Transfermarkt valuation has climbed from roughly £600,000 in June to £4.3 million, reflecting his progress in Sweden. A January move could attract serious competition.
Everton should consider a move, but only with a clear development plan. Doumbia’s defensive work and energy could complement Garner and Hackney, while his age gives the club room to improve him before demanding regular starts. His ambition to play for Real Madrid, Barcelona or Liverpool need not deter Everton; a successful spell at Hill Dickinson Stadium could become the route to that level.
Still, Everton must avoid treating a rising valuation as proof of readiness. Doumbia would arrive from the Allsvenskan, so the club should assess his ability to handle Premier League pace and physical pressure. At around £4.3 million, the risk looks manageable, provided Everton see him as a developing asset rather than an instant solution.
