Lazio have reportedly reached a dead end in their attempts to sign Everton midfielder Tim Iroegbunam, so they must now turn to other options.

The Biancocelesti sold Matteo Guendouzi to Fenerbahce at the start of the month, before signing Kenneth Taylor from Ajax. However, Maurizio Sarri stated that the Dutchman would have complemented the Frenchman rather than replace him, insisting that the gap left by the latter has yet to be fulfilled.

Last week, it was reported that Lazio tried to sign Iroegbunam from Everton. But according to Il Corriere dello Sport (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), the Toffees swiftly turned down the offer, insisting on keeping the 22-year-old English midfielder in Merseyside.

The Aquile had already missed out on several midfield targets this month. They were hoping to sign Alex Toth from Ferencvaros, but the young Hungarian was poached by Bournemouth. Moreover, their longtime target, Giovanni Fabbian, moved from Bologna to Fiorentina, while Quinten Timber ended up joining Olympique Marseille.

While it remains to be seen who will be the next midfielder targeted by Angelo Fabiani, the club is at least making progress on other fronts. Edoardo Motta underwent his medical on Monday before completing his transfer from Reggiana, while Daniel Maldini could become the fourth January signing for Lazio, who have already struck an agreement with Atalanta.
