Manchester United are reportedly on the cusp of welcoming their second signing of the summer after making advances in negotiations.
Indeed, INEOS chiefs have seemingly been hard at work behind the scenes in hashing out a deal for primary target Bryan Mbeumo, who gave his priority to the Red Devils over a fortnight ago.
United then oversaw a short-lived panic when learning of Thomas Frank’s desire to reunite with his Brentford talisman after succeeding Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur. However, it has since been claimed that Spurs have conceded that Mbeumo has his heart set on an Old Trafford move and subsequently pulled out of the race.
Now, with the Reds essentially having a free run to secure his signature, Fichajes (h/t UtdDistrict) reports there has been ‘significant progress’ made between United and Brentford. As things stand, ‘everything indicates’ Mbeumo will be joining Ruben Amorim’s ranks in the near future — perhaps even a matter of days.
It remains to be seen what kind of fee will have made the Bees green-light their star forward’s exit, given they rejected INEOS’ initial proposal of £45 million plus £10m in add-ons. After seeing United activate Matheus Cunha’s £62.5m release clause, they were adamant about making their money’s worth.
In the meantime, Amorim can take solace in the fact that his attack is poised to be bolstered by a player on the back of a career-best campaign. Mbeumo notched 20 league goals in 2024/2025 whilst also contributing eight assists, making it no surprise he was a man in demand when the term drew to a close.
What’s more, the 25-year-old was available to start every single Premier League fixture and played the full 90 minutes in 37 out of the 38 matches.
One factor that the coaching staff will have to accommodate, though, is that Mbeumo will likely be representing Cameroon — along with compatriot Andre Onana — at the Africa Cup of Nations from December to January.
