Legendary former coach Fabio Capello believes that Inter Milan are the one Italian team who are “still contenders” for the Champions League.

The former AC Milan, Juventus, and Real Madrid coach spoke to Italian broadcaster Radio Anch’io lo Sport, via FCInterNews.

This season, Inter suffered a disappointing exit from the Champions League at the round of sixteen stage.

The Nerazzurri had won the first leg of their knockout tie against Atletico Madrid.

And the team did so in fairly convincing fashion. In truth, the 1-0 scoreline did not reflect what had been a fairly one-sided match.

But then the second leg was a different story.

Inter wilted at the Metropolitano. Atletico won the match 2-1 on the night, taking it to extra time and then penalties.

The Nerazzurri faltered in the shootout, allowing the Colchoneros to advance to the quarterfinals.

This was disappointing considering Inter’s dominant form domestically.

And it meant that the season was a bit of an inversion of last campaign, when the Nerazzurri had a dreadful season in Serie A but reached the Champions League final.

Fabio Capello: Inter Milan “Still Contenders” In Champions League

The fact that Inter had reached last season’s final had been a big reason why many saw them as being among the favourites in this campaign’s edition of the competition.

Therefore, the elimination by Atletico could introduce the worry that last season’s run to the final was a one-off.

As far as teams in Serie A, Capello argued that this season “The only team with the potential to get to the final was Inter.”

The former coach called the Nerazzurri “A complete team in all positions.”

“As far as the quality of the players, as well as the system of play.”

“They can cause problems for any team,” Capello declared.

The former Rossoneri and Bianconeri coach argued that “I don’t see another Italian teams as being contenders for the Champions League than Inter.”

“At least in terms of being able to reach the final.
