Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has delivered on his bold promise of winning silverware in his second season at the club. The Australian has always been an outspoken manager, but it is fair to say that he has walked the talk and etched his name in the club’s history books. The Lilywhites managed to end a 17-year wait for a major trophy in spectacular fashion after beating Manchester United in the Europa League final.
And much to Big Ange’s credit, he achieved all the objectives set out to him at the start of the season. Spurs managed to win a major trophy after exceeding all expectations, qualified for Champions League football for next season, and developed young players along the way. However, the only stain that has dampened the mood around N17 is the disastrous domestic campaign endured by Ange’s men.
The North London club finished the Premier League season just a place above the relegation zone. They registered 22 losses along the way and failed to hit the 40-point mark in the league. It was clear that Ange’s men wrote off the domestic campaign midway through the season, and focused solely on the Europa League to save their blushes.
Ange Postecoglou’s future at N17 is heading towards a dead-end as days go by. It was reported earlier that Daniel Levy was leaning towards sacking the Australian in the summer, despite the Europa League success. However, Big Ange is still adamant that he is the right man for the job as he looks to continue his project at Hotspur Way and build on the Europa League success.
It is still looking increasingly likely that Spurs will sack Big Ange in the coming days. And Joe Cole has also added a name in the mix for the managerial job as the Lilywhites look to appoint a new manager for next season. Speaking to Paddy Power (via Football365), Cole said,
“At Tottenham, Daniel Levy is running out of managerial candidates for the job. He’s gone big, he’s gone bold, and he’s gone off the beaten track, but none of them seem to have worked. Michael Carrick could be a good option for the manager’s job. An ex-Spurs player, who understands the club, would be quite nice.”
Joe Cole has pointed out that Tottenham are running out of managerial candidates to replace Ange Postecoglou in the summer as days go by. The ex-Chelsea star has also acknowledged that Daniel Levy has appointed all sorts of managers in recent years as they look to compete for trophies regularly, but none of the managerial appointments have worked out. Cole has now urged Spurs to consider Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick for the job as the Englishman is a former Tottenham player who understands the value of the club.
Michael Carrick has done a good job at Middlesbrough and has a wealth of experience on his coaching CV. The ex-England international narrowly missed out on the Championship playoff spot this season, but it is fair to say that he is overperformed with that squad for successive campaigns. Carrick also led Man United on temporary basis a few seasons back and did well at the helm, going undefeated during his short tenure in the dugout.
Fans will hope that Daniel Levy makes the right decision regarding the managerial situation at N17 as Spurs look to kickstart a new era next season. It is highly unlikely that the Lilywhites would consider Carrick for the job as they need a world-class manager with sufficient Premier League experience in their ranks.
