After nearly a decade at Everton, Dominic Calvert-Lewin moved on from the club when his contract ended in the summer.
David Moyes was keen to keep him around, but Calvert-Lewin felt it was time for a fresh start elsewhere.
Leeds United stepped in with a strong offer, and despite interest from Champions League sides, he chose to join the newly-promoted club. His decision turned a few heads, given the options he had on the table.
Calvert-Lewin faced Chelsea last night, and Leeds fans seemed to be pretty clear in their assessment of his performance.
Leeds picked up a 3-1 win over Chelsea at Elland Road on Wednesday night, with Calvert-Lewin scoring the third goal to wrap up the points.
While fans had been critical of him in recent weeks, his showing against the Blues earned plenty of praise.
@Diddlysquatv3 wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “DCL, now that’s the player I hoped we’d signed!! He was top class! Great to see!”
“DCL was unbelievable. Big headers all over the pitch and sublime hold up play, big reason we’ve won so emphatically,” @AlexFarnell09 posted.
@uLUFC stated: “Injuries have held back DCL over the years but you can see his quality. Putting another man up there with him gets the best out of him. For a pair of freebies, he and Nmecha gave a very expensive Chelsea defence an absolute lesson.”
“Bijol and DCL look utterly transformed in this formation as it plays to their strengths and takes pressure off their weaknesses,” @arnie_booth noted.
@Lovat1Alasdair added: “Best game so far from DCL. MOT.”
It is not a great look for Everton when Calvert-Lewin has scored more than their two main strikers put together.
The Leeds forward has found the net three times so far this season. On the other hand, Beto and Barry have only managed two between them, with Barry still yet to get off the mark.
And while he is far from perfect, there are plenty who feel Calvert-Lewin would have helped keep Everton in a stronger position if he had stayed.
In that context, Moyes’ desire to sign a new striker in January – with Richarlison, Ivan Toney, and Troy Parrott all being mentioned – is understandable.
Everton have also been linked with Joshua Zirkzee, but he is now starting to get more minutes at Manchester United.
