Manchester United may be enduring another turbulent season, but several of their former players are flourishing away from Old Trafford. From the Champions League to domestic competition, ex-Reds are making headlines for all the right reasons.
Anthony Elanga is the latest to impress on the European stage. Now at Newcastle United, the Swedish winger was named Man of the Match in their 4-0 Champions League victory over Union Saint-Gilloise on Wednesday.
His direct running caused constant problems for the Belgian side, winning a penalty and playing a key role in the build-up to two goals. Once a fringe figure at United, Elanga is proving the value of fresh opportunities elsewhere.
Rasmus Hojlund has also made an immediate impact following his loan move to Napoli. The Danish striker scored twice in a Champions League win over Sporting on Wednesday, collecting his own Man of the Match award.
With Benjamin Sesko arriving at United in the summer, Hojlund’s future appears destined to lie away from Manchester, and his opening performances in Europe will only strengthen Napoli’s desire to make the deal permanent.

In Germany, Marcel Sabitzer continues to excel for Borussia Dortmund. The Austrian midfielder, who spent a brief loan spell at Old Trafford in 2023, registered an assist for the second successive European game and earned Man of the Match honours in Dortmund’s recent 4-1 win over Athletic Club.
Once a bit-part player in Manchester, Sabitzer has become an integral figure in Dortmund’s midfield. Even Marcus Rashford, long regarded as one of United’s brightest academy products before falling out of favour, has found fresh impetus on loan at Barcelona.
He starred against Newcastle in the Champions League a few weeks ago, scoring twice, and added an assist in Wednesday’s defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, in what was his third straight game with a goal contribution.
Scott McTominay has enjoyed perhaps the most dramatic revival. After leaving United in the summer of 2024, the Scotland international became a driving force at Napoli, scoring 12 goals and recording six assists en route to the Serie A title.
He was named the league’s Most Valuable Player, his blend of power and leadership shining in a way it never consistently did in Manchester.

Meanwhile, Antony has rediscovered his form at Real Betis. Following a difficult spell in England, the Brazilian winger has contributed goals and assists in Seville, earning a permanent move and restoring some of the confidence that once persuaded United to pay a hefty fee for him.
Taken together, these are just some of the stories that highlight a striking trend. While Manchester continues to search for stability, many of their former players are thriving elsewhere, free from the pressures of Old Trafford and flourishing on some of football’s biggest stages.
