Sheffield United are emerging as strong favourites to bring striker Oli McBurnie back to Bramall Lane this summer, following growing interest from a number of clubs in La Liga and the Championship.

McBurnie Back to Blades?

Earlier this week, I reported exclusively that McBurnie is expected to make a return to Bramall Lane ahead of the 2025/26 season. Despite interest from La Liga, with Getafe and one other unnamed club who have looked at the Scotland international, my source indicated McBurnie’s preference is to return to English football.

Hull City have also been linked with McBurnie, but financial limitations are likely to prevent the Tigers from mounting a serious challenge. United, on the other hand, are believed to be in a position to offer significantly better personal terms as they rebuild under Chris Wilder for another Championship promotion push.

My exclusive news has now been further strengthened by football transfer expert Alan Nixon, who has reported that the Blades are indeed interested in bringing McBurnie back to South Yorkshire. However, Nixon added that the club will face competition from Swansea City, another of McBurnie’s former sides, along with La Liga outfit Celta Vigo, which we now know is the unnamed Spanish club from my report earlier this week.

McBurnie, who scored 29 goals and chipped in with nine assists in 159 appearances for Sheffield United between 2019 and 2024, left Bramall Lane last summer following the expiration of his contract. He then signed a three-year deal with Spanish outfit Las Palmas where he found the net five times and added six assists in 35 appearances. However, he would suffer relegation from La Liga with them, and due to his wages, the club included a relegation release clause which now effectively makes him a free agent. His return would be seen as a major coup for the Blades given his experience, work rate and phenomenal aerial ability.

Sheffield United in the Hunt for Experienced Centre-back

In a separate development, Nixon also revealed that Sheffield United are exploring a deal to sign Bournemouth centre-back Chris Mepham. The 27-year-old Wales international, who has struggled for regular game time in the Premier League, could be targeted as the Blades look to reinforce their defence ahead of a demanding Championship campaign.

Mepham reportedly has just one-year left on his deal with the Cherries, and he featured 38 times during his loan spell at Sunderland where he helped keep nine clean sheets for the Black Cats. Of course, there’s also a possibility that Sunderland will sign him permanently this summer, however, it’s worth noting that for whatever reason, Regis Le Bris chose to play Dan Ballard and Luke O’Nien as a pair, over Mepham, towards the back end of the season just gone.
