Expert Deems PSG Star’s UCL Shortcomings in Paris Mark of Failure Amid Real Madrid Move

On Friday, Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappé confirmed what many had speculated: he’ll leave the club when his contract ends next month. Nonetheless, one pundit believes the Frenchman is leaving his hometown club as a failure. 

In a sincere speech that lasted over three minutes, the 2018 FIFA World Cup champion expressed his thanks, recognized his past mistakes, shared his love for the team, and, as expected, hinted at his next adventure, saying he’s ready for “a new challenge.”

Now, as the transfer saga nears its conclusion, everyone is eagerly anticipating the official announcement of his signing with Real Madrid. With a move to the Spanish capital looming, pundits are recapping his seven-year tenure with his hometown club.

RMC Sport pundit Christophe Dugarry was blunt with his remarks, noting that the 25-year-old’s tenure should be considered a failure because of the inability to win the UEFA Champions League and with only one final appearance.

“The rule that should apply to great players is simple: either you win and it’s a success, or you lose and it’s a failure,” Dugarry said on the French media outlet (h/t Le10Sport). “It’s not more complicated than that. What should define the success or failure of a great player is leading their team to victory and nothing else. 

“Mbappé is at PSG to win the Champions League. From the moment he doesn’t achieve the goal he set for himself, with only one final in 7 years, his journey in the Champions League at PSG can only be considered a failure.

“It’s tough, but we must not be afraid of the truth. For these kinds of players, either they win and it’s glory, or they lose and it’s failure. All the stats and individual titles have no place in a team sport to justify the failure or success of a great player. It’s a failure, we must not be afraid to call it what it is.”
